I finally managed some good time in HiPiHi this past week-and-some, and was able to make progress in translating the interface. My initial plan was to just translate and explain the browser interface: what the icons, buttons, and first level menus are all about. I got that done with a detailed description that grew a bit more detailed than I had intended, but I am happy with the result. Meanwhile, I was bothered that my table of movement keys for HiPiHi was hard to read and took up too much screen real estate, so I re-did the table in a far more compact and, I hope, readable form. The article on First Entry into HiPiHi is now a lot shorter! I occasionally create my own textures, using the GIMP and some other graphics tools. I wanted to take some of them into HiPiHi and donate them to the community at large, so that required me to come to grips with the mysteries of the Backpack. Then I realised that "community" in HiPiHi is analogous to "Group" in SL and donating things to "the community" would not be as simple as I first thought. After translating and working out how object permissions are handled in HiPiHi, I finally got a couple of textures uploaded. I have a little more work to do to be able to make them available to all, but I'm getting there. The first result of this effort is an article on using the Backpack to Upload Textures. The apparent absence of a system to teleport around HiPiHi had bothered me for months and investigating it was moving up my "to do" list in a hurry. Late Friday, after a long evening mostly crunching numbers for my real world business, I headed into HiPiHi determined to pull together everything I already knew about moving around HiPiHi with whatever answers I could find to my teleport and other questions. The result is a just-finished major revision to my article on navigation in HiPiHi. I have solved the how to teleport question, figured out how to use the helicopter, and identified some useful bits of the HiPiHi menu system. If getting around HiPiHi has been a problem for you, read the article (links below). When you have read it, you will be able to go to some of the locations where I took the HiPiHi pictures that appear on the front page of this website. Links to pages mentioned aboveThe HiPiHi interface explained. First Entry into HiPiHi, revised with new avatar navigation keys table. Using the Backpack to upload textures. Navigation in HiPiHi, much revised and a lot more detailed. |
